If you want the Rally House or a cabin at Ride N Rest Campground during rally week, plan on booking close to a year out. There are only so many of them, and the four-bedroom Rally House is a single building — once a group of riders takes it for the first full week of August, that's the whole week gone. Full-hookup RV sites hold up a little longer, but they're usually thin by late spring. Tent and dry camping give you the most room to change your mind, and even those we'd rather have on the books in April than the last week of July.

Which lodging fills first during the Sturgis Rally?

In rough order: the Rally House, then the deluxe climate-controlled cabins, then the full-hookup RV sites, then tent and primitive sites. The reason is simple arithmetic. We have more than 50 full-hookup RV sites with electric, water and sewer, so there's depth there. Cabins near Sturgis, South Dakota are a limited count everywhere in the area, and a four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house with a garage, full kitchen, family room and laundry is a one-of-one. Groups that ride together every year tend to rebook while they're still packing up, which is worth knowing if you're shopping for a Sturgis rally house rental for the first time.

How far ahead should I book a full-hookup RV site?

For a 40-foot rig or anything else that needs specific length and turning room, call in winter or early spring. It isn't that sites disappear all at once — it's that the sites that suit a big fifth wheel or a long motorhome are a subset of the total, and those go before the shorter ones. If you're traveling with friends and want to be parked near each other, that also narrows what works, so earlier is better. Anniversary years draw noticeably heavier traffic, and those years the whole timeline slides forward a few months.

Can I still get a tent site or dry camping spot late?

Often, yes. Tent camping in Sturgis, SD and dry camping during the rally stay open later than anything with walls or a sewer connection, and we do get late calls that work out. What we can't promise late is choice — the shaded tent sites are the first ones people ask for once August heat sets in, and by the opening weekend you may be taking what's left rather than what you pictured. If your plan is flexible and your gear is simple, a few weeks out is workable. A few days out during peak week is a gamble.

When is peak week here?

The rally traditionally runs the first full week of August, but the pressure starts before that. Riders begin rolling in the weekend prior, and the middle days — Tuesday through Thursday — are the tightest. The weekend after the official end clears out faster than most first-timers expect. If your dates have any give in them, arriving early and staying through the back end is usually easier to book than landing squarely in the middle.

What about the rest of the Black Hills summer?

June and July fill for different reasons. Families heading to Mount Rushmore, Deadwood and Spearfish Canyon book a Black Hills campground on Highway 79 for a week at a time, and Bear Butte draws its own visitors. It's less frantic than rally week, but summer weekends still go. Monthly RV sites in Sturgis are worth asking about early if you're staying through a stretch of the season.

What should I have ready when I call?

Your dates, your rig length and whether you need full hookups, how many people are in your party, and whether anyone in the group needs a cabin instead of a tent. If you're organizing eight riders under one roof, know your head count before you ask about the Rally House.

One last piece of advice for a first rally: sort out where you're sleeping before you buy plane tickets or map out day rides on Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Lodging is the part of a Sturgis trip that runs out. The roads don't.
